DOG SITTER – GREENWICH – MAY SUIT RETIRED PERSON
My wife and I are the proud owners of Hilda (Rumpole, she who must be obeyed). She is a basset hound, about 18mths old. Like all bassets she is extremely friendly and playful but hates to be left on her own. We’ll get complaints from the neighbours if we do leave her – she will whine incessantly ! So long as she has company she’s fine..
We also don’t let her off the lead unless we are somewhere completely enclosed. We don’t consider Greenwich Park ‘fully enclosed’ – its got cars driving through it ! She is a scent hound and she is genetically programmed to run off following scents and for her masters to run after her. She’s not disobedient, it is just that you running across a field chasing her whilst she pegs it after the smell of a rabbit is what she has been bred to do !
My wife is a full time surgeon and dogs aren’t generally welcome in that environment. I am a barrister and much of my work is paper based which means I spend much of my time either working from home or in my office in chambers in London – where Hilda is welcome. A lot of my court hearings only last 1-2 hours and Hilda is happy, for some reason, in the car. Most of the time therefore she just tags along with me.
Some of the time however I have to be in court all day. Sometimes that court hearing will last all week and be, for example, in Watford and I will have to leave early to get there. There is no pattern to my work – some weeks I work from home 4 days a week, other days I am in court all day every week. I also often get very little notice of when I am in court. Most of the time I get at least a week’s notice of a court hearing, sometimes I get told I am in court at 2pm the day before a hearing..
The end of the day isn’t so much of a problem: either my wife or I will generally be finished and home by 5-6pm. Quite often one or the other of us will finish early anyway and come home by 2pm. However, if we are being honest, there will be the odd occasion when an operation becomes difficult for my wife and in these circumstances she cannot just leave the patient on the operating table and go home ! Likewise, if my court case overruns I cannot just leave the judge twiddling his thumbs.
In essence, our jobs require us to be flexible with our time so we need somebody who is happy to mirror this. If you have to pick up the children every day by 5pm then this job would not be for you ! Most of the time it wouldn’t be a problem, but we couldn’t promise that it never would be..
What we are looking for therefore is someone come into our house and look after her. She doesn’t require much ‘looking after’, just companionship. We have a pleasant house and we’d be happy for you to sit down and watch TV or read a book, make a cup of tea or some light lunch and / or surf the web ! We aren’t expecting you to do much – just be present most of the day and take the dog for a couple of shortish walks. We’d be happy for you to have the odd companion around, although no parties please !
What we do need however is a high degree of flexibility: we may not use your services for a couple of weeks but then suddenly need them for the whole of a week. We may suddenly be late one evening when we can’t help it. We also need a high degree of reliability: if I am late for work there is a whole courtroom waiting for me to arrive (and a grumpy client for whom the day is the most important of their lives) and if my wife is late there is an anaesthetised patient and a room full of medics in operating gowns and no surgeon.. “Sorry, the dog’s nanny was late !†doesn’t go down well in these situations.
Even if, for example, you could only offer your services Monday to Wednesday this may be fine: we might find somebody else who can only do Thursday and Friday – se we would come to a sort of ‘job share’ arrangement.
Standard hours would be 8am to 5.30pm and we would pay £25. If the day went short we would still pay £25, if it overran by a bit we would expect this to go unrewarded – a ‘swings and roundabouts’ arrangement.
