Details:
I am looking for a home-stay type of situation for my two female dogs, (both 3 years old in December) in a non-smoking home with a good sized, secure garden. I would like them to be in a situation that’s as close as possible to my home, around people all day, and for them have plenty of love, attention and exercise, which is what they are used to.
Maybe you’re a dog lover who’s home all day and would enjoy the company of two friendly, affectionate medium-sized doggies? Or perhaps new playmates or walking companions for your own dog or dogs?
We recently relocated from the USA where I was living for the past 17 years. We’ve just spent a few months up in Cumbria and have now just moved to Blockley village, near Moreton in Marsh, to be closer to my family.
I’m looking for 2 or 3 full days a week to enable me to concentrate on starting my business here. I have been off work with an injury for the past 4 years, so the dogs have been my whole life, in that we spend all of our time together and I try to give the the very best life I can in terms of care and attention, great walks and adventures and home prepared, natural food.
Some background information: I adopted Sophie and Jasmine in February and March of 2009, after I became injured from my work due to extensive computer use in my job. (I have a carpal tunnel-type injury and ongoing pain). Because of an extended break from work and a period of rehabilitation, I knew I had the time and
commitment to devote to adopting and raising dogs, something I had always wanted to do since having a family dog as a child.
Sophie and Jasmine came into my life within a couple of weeks of each other. They were both born in late December 2008. I adopted Sophie from a fostering situation down in Tennessee in the USA. She came to me already spayed at 9 weeks old. She is a Catahoula Leopard Hound mixed with Australian Shepherd.
I decided fairly quickly that I wanted to raise her with another puppy and actively searched for another Catahoula-type mix. Three weeks later, Jasmine arrived from a shelter in Georgia, at 12 weeks old, the same age as Sophie at that point. Jasmine is a little larger than Sophie, and is also a Catahoula, mixed with Labrador.
Very quickly, they became a rambunctious double act, and have never been apart since. I regularly took them to “puppy playgroup†so they have been well socialised with other dogs from a very young age. They also both adore people and are very friendly. As intelligence goes (although I am probably biased!) I would say they are super-smart dogs, both of whom are very quick learners.
Sophie and Jasmine would also attend a doggie day care facility near my home in Maine, (USA) know as “Camp Bow Wow†once a week. (Sometimes twice, with very occasional overnight stays). This facility encouraged dogs to mix and play all day long in large outdoor and indoor play areas. They even had web cams so I could watch them from home! Sometimes the “double act†became a little
too boisterous and the staff at Camp Bow Wow would separate them for the rest of the day by putting them in different exercise runs with other dogs, just to break the dynamic and foster a little more individuality.
They have pretty much had my full attention from the moment they came into my life. In Maine, where we lived, they lived a life full of adventure with lots of hiking, beach trips, swimming and long walks in the woods and forests. Consequently, they will need a good long walk during the day, in their day care situation, as they are getting presently from me. I think a garden is also really important so they have freedom to roam and play. Other dogs in the house are fine.
I believe in positive reinforcement training methods. I have worked with trainers in the USA and up in Cumbria.
I’m looking to try and get something started as soon as possible so that we can establish a happy routine and a good relationship with the day care provider. I feel this is important as it’s been a little unsettled for the girls these last few months.
