Hi there fellow dog lovers,
my name is Danny Bloom & I love Dogs. I always have, even as a young child. My mother even nick-named me Daniel Spaniel. I'v lived with dogs all my life as my mother & father had a Westie called Angus before I was born. Today I have two Westies of my own, brother & sister Buster & Bonnie. They were rescue dogs who came to me from the West Highland Rescue Association when they were three years old from a family going through a divorce who found themselves unable to look after them. Bonnie & Buster recently turned eleven and are still in fine form.
As a dog walker I have strong views regarding the size of the groups I am willing to walk in each session. Too many dog walkers, in my opinion, take out groups that are far to large for them to properly handle. This is at best irresponsible and at worst dangerous. Every day I see walkers with as many as ten dogs at once. This means the walker cannot possibly give any of the dogs the attention they are being paid for nor can they properly monitor & control their behaviour. In addition to this, most Dogs go number two as soon as they get to the park or not long after. With so many dogs going at the same time, all in different spots there is no way they can keep track of it all. As a result they leave dog mess everywhere which I find completely disgusting. My girlfriend is a child-minder and she along with thousands of other people use the same parks when they take out the children. Finally regarding the large groups, I don't want to be alarmist but on more than one occasion I'v had to help one of these walkers because one or more of the dogs in there care have gotten out of the park and ran off. The worst thing about this was watching him/her try to retrieve the dogs because having failed to form any relationship with any of the dogs due to the number they were walking, the dogs didn't listen to them. As you can imagine this made the dogs very difficult to retrieve!
I only ever walk groups of less than five. This allows me not only to avoid the things I just mentioned but also to put together groups with dogs who get on well together. This takes a little bit of trial and error but its not too hard to work out. Some dogs like to be chased, some like to chase. Some like a bit of rough & tumble, others are more delicate. Some are sociable others shy etc. etc.
As I'm sure you can tell by now, I could talk about dogs all day.
Previous Experience
I got in to dog walking when a friend of mine who was walking dogs offered me a job. He had more dogs on his books than he could handle. I worked with him for just over a year, walking a wide variety of breeds from large to small. I'm currently trying to branch out on my own as my friend is soon returning to his native Holland.
