Previous Experience
During university, I volunteered in an animal care home looking after both dogs and cats, many of which had suffered mistreatment, gaining experience of how an animal rescue centre operates on a daily basis. I graduated from the University of Lleida, in Spain, with a degree in Social Education and have since gained experience in a wide range of fields relating to social work, both in Spain and in the UK. I am currently working in a hostel for homeless people, run by St John of God Hospitaller Services, as a Key Project Worker. My responsibilities include working closely with and supporting those in residence, assisting with their reintegration into society or their reconnection to their home countries. I also work on a one-on-one basis with clients to discuss and create personal plans, helping them to achieve both their short term and long term aims. With this role, it is particularly important to be able to communicate with both empathy and understanding, to gain the trust and respect of clients in difficult situations. These are important skills which I have demonstrated and developed throughout my time in this job. This role has also given me experience in working long hours in challenging conditions, where I am constantly required to use initiative and be proactive to find solutions to a variety of issues. Working with vulnerable adults is unpredictable and I have demonstrated the ability to be flexible and adapt to different situations, whilst working under pressure.
I have gained experience across a variety of roles in Social Work, developing communication skills through working as a contact supervisor, where I was required to oversee contact meetings between vulnerable children and family members. During these meetings it was essential to deal with every situation with empathy and show understanding for the stressful nature of these meetings. It was also important to build trust with the families whilst dealing with each case in a professional manner. These meetings required detailed notes to be taken and comprehensive reports to be written in English afterwards.
